Where To Eat Before A Fight In Fresno

Taquerias, Basque family style and a couple of counter spots that will get you fed and out the door in forty minutes.

The best pre-fight meal is the one you can get in and out of. Here is how we think about it, by how much time you have.

Forty minutes or less

Counter service near downtown. A taqueria order gets to the table in ten minutes and you are back on the street before the undercard. Skip anywhere with a host stand on a fight night unless you booked it.

An hour and a half

This is Basque territory. Fresno's Basque family style tradition is one of the genuinely distinct things about eating here, and it is built for groups. Order for the table, get there by five-thirty, and you will still make first bell.

Bringing a group of eight or more

Call ahead. Everything downtown fills up when there is an event at the arena, and a walk-in of eight at six-fifteen is a forty-five minute wait. Two phone calls the day before solves the whole problem.

What not to eat

Anything heavy and fried right before you sit in a hot room for four hours. Every fan learns this once. Eat like you are going to be standing and yelling, because you are.

Late night

Most of the Tower District kitchens run late, and there are a couple of spots on Blackstone that never seem to close. If you are driving back toward Clovis or Madera, there is enough open on the way out that you do not have to plan it.
