Recap: Summer Scrap Was Decided In The Clinch
A close card where the difference was who could work in the half second before the referee broke them.

Some cards are decided by power. This one was decided by half a second of work before the break.
The pattern of the night
Three of the five bouts featured fighters who kept closing distance and then stalling there. Our referees break fast, so stalling gets you separated and it gets you warned. The fighters who scored in that window won their rounds. The ones who waited for the break lost them.
Fight of the night
The third bout on the card. Two southpaws, neither willing to circle away, and a fourth round where both looked done and neither stopped throwing. It got a standing ovation and it deserved it.
The upset
Our co-main favorite lost a split decision he was probably winning after two rounds. He gassed. In a five-round bare-knuckle fight, conditioning is not a tiebreaker, it is the whole fight after round three.
Judging notes
One judge turned in a card that had the main event four rounds to one. The other two had it three to two. That spread is wider than we like, and we said so publicly, because the sport does not get taken seriously if promoters only complain about scoring when they lose.
Attendance
Just under capacity, with a heavy walk-up crowd from Madera and Selma. Walk-up is a good sign. It means people heard about the last card from somebody who was there.
