How Hand Wraps Work In Bare-Knuckle Boxing

The most common question we get at weigh-ins is whether fighters wrap their hands at all. They do. The rule is about where the wrap stops.

What is allowed

Gauze and tape support the wrist, the thumb and the back of the hand. The wrap has to end at least an inch behind the knuckle line, so the striking surface itself stays bare. Nothing hardening, nothing soaked, nothing layered up to make a shell.

Why the wrist gets all the attention

Knuckles cut. Wrists break. The injury that actually ends careers in this sport is a wrist or a metacarpal, not a split over the eye. A good wrap is mostly a wrist splint that happens to run over the hand.

The inspection

A commission inspector watches every wrap go on, initials the finished hand, and both corners can send someone to observe. If a wrap comes loose during the bout, the referee pauses the fight and the inspector re-checks it.

What you can copy in training

Do not wrap for the heavy bag the way you wrap for a fight. Bag work is where hand conditioning happens, and burying your knuckles in padding defeats the point. Wrap the wrist, keep the knuckle honest, and let the load build slowly.

The wrap protects what heals badly. It leaves alone what heals fast.

Anybody in our fundamentals class gets taught the fight wrap in week two, mostly so they understand what they are looking at when they watch a card.
